October 2025 Newsletter

Welcome to my latest E-newsletter which provides an update on what I have been doing within the constituency and in Cardiff.

This month I am keen to highlight two events, a Funding fair I have organised which will take place in a few weeks, and a further event in November which will celebrate the best very best of our county’s businesses, produce, and community organisations.

If you would like to meet with me to discuss any matter or if I can help in another way, please email me at [email protected] or call my office on 01686 610887.

Unacceptable Wait for Treatment for Welsh Patients

Russell George MS speech in the Senedd's NHS debate.

I spoke in the Senedd last week on the NHS, and once again raised the deeply unfair situation facing Powys patients waiting for treatment in English Hospitals.

I raised the issue of a local resident who had received a letter from the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry which confirmed Welsh commissioners had instructed them not to offer a first outpatient appointment until she had waited close to 52 weeks.

I will continue to raise examples of how Powys patients are receiving second class care until the Welsh Government intervene to stop the inequality.

Funding Fair

I’m hosting a Funding Fair on Friday 24th October 2025, 11am-1pm at The Monty Club, Newtown.

The event is free and open to all, including charities, community groups, and voluntary organisations across Montgomeryshire looking for funding support. Representatives from major funding bodies - including the National Lottery Community Fund, Heritage Fund, Sport Wales, Arts Council of Wales Lottery Unit, WCVA, PAVO and Powys County Council will be on hand to offer advice and guidance.

The event will be a chance to discuss your projects directly with funders, whether you need support for new initiatives, community programmes, building improvements or sustaining existing services.
I hope local groups will come along and make the most of this opportunity.

There is no requirement to book, but if you do need further information please contact me by email at [email protected] or call my office on 01686 610887.

Consultation on New National Park

A further Consultation has begun on a proposed Glyndŵr National Park, which covers part of Powys, it will run until 2nd December 2025.

The consultation follows two years of evaluation commissioned by Welsh Government. There are several public meetings that have been arranged, including one at Llangynog Memorial Hall on October 14 from 2pm until 5pm and 6.30pm until 8pm.

I have not been convinced that Montgomeryshire would benefit. Changes could adversely affect farm diversification efforts, limiting opportunities for rural businesses who are already under pressure.

Holiday Rental Businesses Face Uncertainty

Russell George MS questions Mark Drakeford MS on the the 182 day rule for Self-catering businesses.

If a self-catering business does not manage to let their property for 182 days a year, the Welsh Government does not recognise it as a 'proper' business.

As a result, they have to pay more in the taxation system which makes the business less viable. This regulation I remain opposed to and continue to challenge.

If you are a self-catering business in Montgomeryshire, please respond to Welsh Government's consultation: https://www.gov.wales/proposed-refinements-classification...

Montgomeryshire Day

I am proud to be hosting 'Montgomeryshire Day' at the Senedd on Tuesday 11th November 2025, celebrating the very best of our county’s businesses, produce, and community organisations.

This event is organised in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union of Wales, and will showcase the strength of Montgomeryshire, offering Senedd Members and Ministers and other guests the opportunity to meet local producers, learn more about the county’s industries, and sample some of the finest food and drink that Mid Wales has to offer.

If you would like to attend either as a guest, or as a local producer, please contact me at [email protected].

Medical Research event

As Chair of the Cross-party Group on Medical Research, I had the opportunity to sponsor an event in the Senedd last week that highlighted the importance of medical research and the benefits of life saving medical research to the people of Wales and the Welsh economy.

The event was arranged in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation Cymru and Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and brought together Members of the Senedd from across parties, alongside leading organisations from across the medical research landscape in Wales.

From cutting-edge innovation to patient-centred breakthroughs, the event highlighted the critical role of medical research in improving health outcomes, boosting the Welsh economy, and driving collaboration between academia, industry, clinicians, and patients.
